Paper Jams in Tray 3 - HP LaserJet Pro M402dn
Paper Jams in Tray 3 can occur if paper is loaded incorrectly, the guides are misaligned, or damaged sheets are used. These jams can be cleared quickly by following the steps below.
Note: Always turn off the printer and unplug the power cord before checking inside to ensure your safety.
Step 1: Remove Tray 3
Pull Tray 3 completely out of the printer.

Step 2: Remove Paper from the Tray
Take out all paper from the tray. Inspect it carefully and discard any wrinkled, curled, or damaged sheets--they can cause jams.

Step 3: Check and Adjust the Rear Paper Guide
Locate the rear paper guide and make sure it is positioned correctly for the paper size you are using.
If necessary, pinch the release tab and slide the guide until it clicks into the correct position.

Step 4: Reload Paper into the Tray
Place a neat, flat stack of paper into the tray.
- Ensure all four corners of the stack are even.
- The top of the stack should be below the maximum-height indicators inside the tray.
- Do not overfill the tray.

Step 5: Reinsert and Close the Tray
Slide the tray back into the printer until it clicks securely into place.

Step 6: Open the Front Door
Press the front-door release button, then open the front door fully to access the toner and jam areas.

Step 7: Remove the Toner Cartridge
Carefully lift out the toner cartridge and set it aside on a clean, flat surface.

Note: Avoid exposing toner cartridge to bright light for more than a few minutes.
Step 8: Lift the Jam-Access Cover
Gently lift the jam-access cover to expose the paper path leading from Tray 3 toward the fuser.

Step 9: Remove Any Jammed Paper
Carefully pull out any jammed sheets from the paper path.
Use both hands and pull slowly and evenly to avoid tearing the paper.

Step 10: Reinstall the Toner Cartridge
Place the toner cartridge back into the printer and ensure it is seated properly.

Step 11: Close the Front Door
Lower the front door firmly until it locks into place.

After You're Done, Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and print a test page.
If jams continue, check for worn rollers, misaligned guides, or torn scraps of paper in the Tray 3 paper path.
📌 Important Notes to Remember
Use Good-Quality Paper: Avoid damp, curled, or damaged sheets.
Align Paper Guides Properly: Guides that are too tight or too loose can cause jams.
Remove Paper Gently: Always pull paper out slowly and evenly to prevent tearing.
Check for Hidden Scraps: Inspect the tray and feed area carefully for leftover pieced of paper.
Avoid Overloading: Keep the paper stack below the maximum fill line in the tray.
