Paper Jams in Tray 1 - HP LaserJet Pro M402dn
Paper Jams in Tray 1 (multipurpose tray) can occur if the paper isn't loaded properly or if the paper type doesn't match the printer settings. Thankfully, these jams are simple to clear with a few careful steps.
Note: Always turn off the printer and unplug the power cord before inspecting inside to ensure your safety.
Step 1: Check for Visible Jammed Paper
Look at Tray 1 and the paper feed area.
If you see paper sticking out from Tray 1, grasp the leading edge of the jammed sheet.

Step 2: Remove the Jammed Paper
Slowly and evenly pull the paper straight out of the printer.
Use both hands to avoid tearing it--small pieces of torn paper can cause future jams.

Tip: Do not force the paper out an angle. Pulling too hard or unevenly can damage the feed rollers.
Step 3: Check Inside Tray 1
After removing the jammed paper, inspect the tray and paper path for any remaining scraps or curled sheets.
Make sure no pieces are stuck behind the paper guides or rollers.

Step 4: Reload Paper Correctly
- Fan the paper stack gently to prevent sheets from sticking together.
- Adjust the paper guides so they fit snugly against the paper without bending it.
- Ensure the paper type and size match the printer settings.

After You're Done, Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and try printing again. If jams continue, check that you're using dry, flat paper and that the feed rollers are clean.
📌 Important Notes to Remember
Remove Paper Gently: Always pull jammed paper slowly and evenly with both hands.
Avoid Overfilling Tray 1: Overloading the tray can cause repeated jams.
Use Quality Paper: Damp, wrinkled, or thick paper can feed improperly and jam.
Inspect for Scraps: Tiny torn pieces left in the feed rollers can lead to recurring jams.
